Sash Windows Repair and Replacement

Reassemble the window, reattach the hardware and then lubricate the pulley axles with silicone or Teflon spray. Reinstall the parting bead, and install the upper sash.

Repair

Remove any security fittings that are just in front of the lower window sash. Next, take off the staff bead and pull out the bottom sash. Then, take the cords or chains on both sides and tie them to stop them from being pulled back into the frame by the attached weights. The next step is to take out the upper sash. The sash stops must be removed and a thin strip of wood that is used to hold the sash. Also, remove any painted-covered hardware. Reverse the sash to reveal the weight. It is a massive iron or lead cylinder that is hidden in a cavity, 257634 and supported by a cord. To stop the sash from falling into the void pierce it using a nail, 257634.xyz and then sacrifice the weight.

When the sashes are untied, clean out the jamb and meet rails. remove the glazing bars and sash cords, and remove any paint off the sash stops using an utility knife. Reattach the stops once the sashes are reinstalled. Use nails that are small enough not to puncture the weight of the balancing.

To reassemble the sash place the top sash onto its track first, 257634.xyz and then the lower sash. Make sure the sash stops are properly aligned with the frame, and then reattach the parting beads if needed. Then, reconnect the sash chain or cords and then re-attach the axles for the sash pulleys.
