This album marked the conclusion of the original Toto lineup and was the first to feature the new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album is a return to a classic sextet format and it was a more consistent, more powerful effort that had a more grittier edge. The more edgy sound of the album reflected the maturation of the group and featured drummer Bobby Kimball's increased ability on the drums and an improved, mature vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard playing was also sharper, more complex and less akin to earlier efforts.

After touring to promote their album, the band recorded their Amsterdam live performance which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. The group released a brand new studio album a few months after, and went on a world tour help promote it. During this period, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to discover songs that had never been recorded before. The album was released as a double album titled Then and Now in 2001. It was the first album in the band's history that did not include any single song that had the word "A" in its title. It also included one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth record, Old Is New was a commercial failure and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis, which limited his singing ability. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming was replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.
