In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated near the edges of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can trigger spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of a chain stretch or a jump in the chain link of the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test since there are different pins on the connector, and they all have different functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read about 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation. Check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, i experienced massive power loss like the engine is out of gas or the injectors aren't firing at all. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked in gasoline, and the 4th was dry. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I'm not certain what to do, as i feel i have pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. Testing them is easy to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's side).
