If you're looking for a buggy to take on difficult terrain, you should pick one with large tires. These will cope well over grass, cobbles and dirt tracks, and provide the smoothest ride for anyone. They are also great for jogging, as they have a suspension built-in and are easy enough to climb up and down kerbs. However, the downside is that they are quite heavy to push.

It's also easy to move up and down kerbs, and it can fit in small car boots. It can also be used as a pram that comes with an infant car seat for newborns and toddlers.

Fabric sling seats are tucked within the frame of the buggie rather than over it like modular seats. This design has a lower centre of gravity and a perfect height, instantly making it easier to push and lighter to kerb pop (you cannot overestimate the amount of times you'll have to do this as a new parent!)

Seating

There are many options for seating in three wheelers. For babies, there is the option to use the included carrycot and (which MFM reviewer Alice says is a cosy and comfortable lie flat bed that can be used on and off the buggy) and older infants and toddlers can be seated in the world-facing or parent facing seat unit that is roomy and cushioned and has adjustable ventilation. It's important to note that these seats aren't fully reclined, but they can be lowered to the lowest level which will give your child plenty of headroom and space to move around.

A sling seat made of cloth is also available, which has the advantage of being set snugly inside the frame instead of sitting on top as a modular seat and this delivers a much lower centre of gravity as well as a perfect weight distribution. This makes it much easier and lighter to push particularly over bumpy terrains or curbs. MFM reviewer Kath really liked the way this type of seat dealt with these challenges.

This type of buggy comes with an extensive basket and other useful features, such as an hood that can be extended with 50+ UV protection, an easy to use brake pedal, and some innovative visibility lights that can be placed on the front of the passengers for improved safety on difficult terrain.

Storage

The 3 wheel twin stroller-wheeled frame is much more stable and can be pushed with just one hand. It's also better for terrain that is difficult. However, it does mean that the shopping basket can't hold as much as a 4-wheeler buggy.

The MFM reviewers noted that the 3-wheeler frame didn't fit through their home doors or car boot. If you're worried about space, make sure to check out the dimensions when the buggy is folded before purchasing.

Choose a 3-wheeler with 2 (or 3!) seats. This is the most suitable option for your child's future and will save you money. The iCandy strawberry sport is one of the best of these that can be used as a single from day dot and later converts to twin buggies when your baby starts walking.

Tyres

These tyres absorb bumps and uneven surfaces to make your child's journey more comfortable. They are typically used on pushchairs such as the Phil and Ted's Sport, which MFM reviewer Kath said was "an amazing ride for her toddler". She also noted that its grippy tyres made it easy to navigate cobbles and kerbs.

They can be difficult to maintain and will require air pressure topped up regularly. These tyres are more prone to punctures, so you should always carry an repair kit and spare inner tube when you're out and out and about.

PU tyres can be seen on more pushchairs than the air-filled tyres but they're still as durable. You can tell PU tires by their smooth appearance and soft, smooth feel. They also slide well on smooth and tightly woven surfaces.

If you move your hand over the tyres, you can determine if they're PU or rubber. If it feels like it's moving, then it's a rubber or PU. You can also test whether your buggy comes with PU tyres by sliding them across a flat, clean surface. They should roll easily and fit snugly into wheel hubs.

Foam tyres can withstand the rough terrain that comes with high-performance buggies. The downside is that the foam can expand and cause your buggy to feel less stable since it loses its springy nature. You'll also find that these tyres may frequently be noisy, as they make a lot of noise when you turn and make your way around town.
